Nickel felt, also known as nickel fiber felt, is a type of fiber felt made of pure nickel metal, commonly used in the gas-liquid transport layer of AEM electrolysis cells. What are the characteristics that make nickel felt a key material for alkaline electrolysis cells? Are we only discussing the characteristics of nickel felt in this article?
[1] High Porosity:  Nickel felts has a continuous three-dimensional mesh structure, which can achieve extremely high porosity, generally between 50% -85%, and some can reach up to 94%. The pore size range is usually between 20um and 150um, which is conducive to the emission of hydrogen and oxygen gases inside the electrolytic cell and the circulation of electrolyte.
[2]Large specific surface area: compared with nickel metal mesh, nickel foam and other materials, nickel fiber felt has a larger specific surface area and can fully contact with other substances. For example, more contact with anion exchange membrane in the electrolytic cell can reduce contact resistance, so the reaction rate is higher and faster.
[3 ]Good mechanical properties: made of fine 3um-15um nickel metal fibers, with multiple contact points between independent components, it has good tensile strength, flexibility, high specific strength, and high specific stiffness, can withstand certain external forces and deformations, and is not easily damaged.
[4]Strong corrosion resistance: Nickel metal itself has a certain degree of corrosion resistance, and nickel fiber felt can quickly form a very thin passivation film on the surface, which can resist the corrosion of atmosphere, alkali, and certain acids.
[5]Excellent conductivity and thermal conductivity: As a metal material, nickel felt has good conductivity and thermal conductivity, which can meet the requirements of conductivity and thermal conductivity in fields such as electrolysis and batteries.
